Over 75 years ago, Costa Rica abolished its army. John Lennon dreamed of a world without war, and since 1948, Costa Rica has had a commitment to ensure harmony and diplomacy within its borders. In 2020, December 1st was declared a national holiday.

What you'll often hear is that if Costa Rica ever needed a military, the United States would step in to assist. It’s called the Rio Treaty which was approved by the Americas in 1947.

With the recent events in Nicaragua last month sparking concerns of civil unrest, this idea feels more pressing, and one can only hope the treaty is honored if Costa Rica’s peace and stability were ever at risk.

I took this photo in Cuba, but Costa Rica also has a statue of John Lennon in San José (I just haven't gotten there yet!). However, the statue in San José was not without controversy. Some people voiced objections to the statue, recalling Lennon’s comment about the Beatles being “more popular than Jesus.”

In one article I read, a reporter mentioned how a newspaper wanted to take a picture of women standing beside the statue, but they declined, concerned about how the church might perceive them.

How did I celebrate my 50th birthday? Well, not how I thought I would. Así es la vida (such is life).… I trust and believe wildheartedly that this move is a step towards healing my broken body, fostering a deeper sense of community, and stepping into a new phase of life.

And for those wondering.... in a lot of places around the country, you won't find typical "moving trucks". So you learn to... Do what you can with what you have. One of my many mantras since moving here 12 ½ years ago.

Balancing out the serious posts with a little humor...

I came across a facial soap product page that, in the English title, promised to “eliminate fat.” And while I knew they actually meant to say “oil” or “grease”… still, I couldn’t help but imagine if it worked on ALL the “fat” on my body. If so, I’d be buying it in bulk!

(I did reach out to the company to let them know about the error so they could correct it.)

Albeit silly, translation quirks like this are just one of the many reasons to know Spanish when you move to Costa Rica. Spanish to English (and vice versa) doesn’t always translate perfectly, and a single word can make all the difference!
