Thinking back to 2012, my first holiday season in Costa Rica...
I still smile at the contrasts: tropical sunshine and the howl of monkeys replacing the chilly California winters, turning on my gas furnace to try to keep warm. But what stands out most in my memory? Apples, grapes, pomegranates, and molasses—a surprising mix that defined that festive season. 🍎🐒☀️

Part 2 of the challenges in this latest move… $Part 2 of the challenges in this latest move… You know those Facebook posts that give you options of what you’ve done or not done in your life? Like… gotten a tattoo, jumped out of a plane… and you get a point for each one you have or have not done? Well, does a fracture count as a broken bone? I mean, it is actually “broken”, just not all the way (thankfully!!) 😉 Never a dull moment in my life… And to share what it cost: While I could have gone to the public clinic and all costs would have been covered, I chose to have quicker and easier care via a private clinic. To get the X-ray, see the radiologist and see an orthopedist who just happened to be at the clinic that day, the cost was $200. A follow up X-ray and chat with the orthopedist was $165. So… this last move was more challenging than oth

So… this last move was more challenging than others. It started off with my sweet silly Sunshine ☀️ getting so stressed out that he ended up with crystals in his bladder.

He refused to take the meds, so the vet asked to see him again before giving him a different medication (he does not do well in his carrier so neither of us were happy about that!).

When all was said and done, it ended up being about $325. As you’re planning your life abroad, remember to factor in vet care (plus their food, toys and treats!) for your pets!

Sharing a breakdown so you can see what each service cost… It’s also a good way to practice Spanish and familiarize yourself with new words!

You’ll often see announcements on the walls in the local clinics, focused on a wellness theme or health concern.

This was attached to my prescription bag. It’s bringing awareness to HIV and AIDS. It’s encouraging people to get tested and letting people know that condoms can be requested at the clinic.

Over 75 years ago, Costa Rica abolished its army. John Lennon dreamed of a world without war, and since 1948, Costa Rica has had a commitment to ensure harmony and diplomacy within its borders. In 2020, December 1st was declared a national holiday.

What you'll often hear is that if Costa Rica ever needed a military, the United States would step in to assist. It’s called the Rio Treaty which was approved by the Americas in 1947.

With the recent events in Nicaragua last month sparking concerns of civil unrest, this idea feels more pressing, and one can only hope the treaty is honored if Costa Rica’s peace and stability were ever at risk.

I took this photo in Cuba, but Costa Rica also has a statue of John Lennon in San José (I just haven't gotten there yet!). However, the statue in San José was not without controversy. Some people voiced objections to the statue, recalling Lennon’s comment about the Beatles being “more popular than Jesus.”

In one article I read, a reporter mentioned how a newspaper wanted to take a picture of women standing beside the statue, but they declined, concerned about how the church might perceive them.
