Mother’s Day in Costa Rica isn’t in May

My blogs try to counter the misinformation that I see spreading around Facebook groups about Costa Rica as well as the internet, in general.

This is one of the big reasons I wrote my book, Moving to Costa Rica Simplified (grab your copy here).

(Prefer to watch versus read? Here’s a 1 1/2 minute video.)

Yesterday (May 11, 2025) I came across a Mother’s Day post shared by a mostly foreign-owned, exclusive community selling overpriced lots and homes in Costa Rica.

I’ll give them points for posting in both English and Spanish but here’s the problem…

Mother’s Day in Costa Rica isn’t in May. It’s in August. And it’s a really important date… so much so that it’s a national holiday where workers receive double time. It’s a celebration of family, unity, and tradition that speaks to the heart of the culture here.

What struck me wasn’t just the mistake, but what it represented: the all-too-common gap between marketing Costa Rica and truly living in it. There’s a difference between selling the dream of Costa Rica and actually understanding its people, culture, and its deeply held traditions.

Integrating into this country means more than just owning a home here – it means knowing the heart of it. The holidays, the traditions, the ways – and the reasons – people gather and celebrate…

If you’re planning to make Costa Rica your home – or if you’re already here but feel like you’re still just skimming the surface – I’m here to support you in creating that deeper connection. Costa Rica is a living, breathing culture that will welcome you, but only if you’re willing to truly be a part of it.
